Wayne Rooney has been told what he “needs” to succeed in management after a mixed start to life as Plymouth Argyle boss.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Rooney was appointed Argyle’s new boss in May as he looked to get his managerial career back on track. After a 4-0 thrashing against Sheffield Wednesday, Plymouth have won in the Carabao Cup and drawn in the Championship. Now, ex-Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has offered some salient advice for the former Manchester United star going forward.

    WHAT TONY PULIS SAID

Speaking about Rooney to Betway, the 66-year-old said: “Many young managers ring me up and ask for my advice and I always say you should bring in someone with experience away from the training ground who can help deal with all the noise behind the scenes. I think that has to happen for younger managers to thrive. Wayne has obviously got people around him that he trusts around the football pitch, but he also needs someone in between who can actually steady everybody down when it does get tough.”

He added: “Plymouth is a difficult place to go and get results and Wayne’s priority is to win games at Home Park. If he does that on a regular basis he’ll be okay. They’ve never been great travellers in the Championship so he knows that’s going to be tough but when they play home games he’s got to make sure they win games. I think he needs an experienced person beside him. Someone who’s local who knows the game and everything else and can work between him and the owners just to make sure everything is settled, everything is understood and that will clear the pathway for him to get results and push on in his career.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Former England international Rooney’s stellar playing career is yet to translate into management. He was sacked by Birmingham City earlier this year and has failed to achieve a win percentage in excess of 30 per cent in charge of Derby County and D.C. United. If he fails in his current job, this Plymouth role could be his last chance in management.

      WHAT NEXT?

Rooney’s Plymouth, who sit 21st in the Championship after picking up one point from two games, next travel to 18th-placed Queens Park Rangers next Saturday as they seek their first win of the league campaign.
