WHAT HAPPENED?

The Herons were back in action on Saturday when playing host to the Chicago Fire. Their talismanic No.10 played no part in that contest after suffering an unfortunate ankle injury in the 2024 Copa America final – with that knock leaving him in tears on the bench.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi was at Chase Stadium to see Inter Miami – who were donning their new third kit in a home fixture – claim a vital 2-1 victory. The Argentine’s former Barcelona team-mate, Jordi Alba, netted the winning goal for Tata Martino’s side in the 75th minute.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Before a ball was kicked in that contest, Inter Miami saluted the efforts of their history-making captain. An elaborate show was put on for Messi – which featured a video highlighting some of his most memorable triumphs, along with fireworks and the presentation of a special picture in which his trophy wins were worked into a ‘45’ montage.

WHAT NEXT?

Messi will be hoping to add to his medal collection with Inter Miami over the coming months. There has been talk of him being forced to sit out the defence of a Leagues Cup crown, as he works his way back to fitness, but he will have a leading role to play in their ongoing bid for MLS Cup glory.
