The “Alien Superstar” singer performed a slice of a 1992 song from Tia and Tamera Mowry’s girl group in front of Tia on tour

With her “feet planted firmly on the ground” at Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, Tia Mowry was “so shocked” when Bey acknowledged her in the crowd.

Mowry, 46, told PEOPLE at the Overjoyed launch event in Los Angeles on Feb. 20 about the surprising moment in 2023 when Beyoncé, 43, infused her ballad “1+1” with a sliver of Tia and twin sister Tamera Mowry’s 1992 song “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah after noticing Tia standing in the audience.

“I was so shocked when that happened,” she says, referring to Beyoncé singing some of the lyrics from the twin sisters’ girl group, Voices, during the concert at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., on Sept. 4, 2023.

“It was definitely a moment, and I’m grateful and overjoyed for that moment, and she’s wonderful. I’ve met her several times,” Tia adds.

The Sister, Sister star admitted she didn’t realize the mini tribute had even happened until another person in the crowd nudged her about it.

“What’s so funny, I was off to the side of the stage, so … somebody behind me had to say, ‘Oh my gosh, this just happened,’ and I was like, ‘What?’ ” she recalls. “And then I had seen it online, and she’s amazing.”

“That is so cool. Yeah, I’m a huge fan,” she concludes about the nod.

A day after that 2023 moment, Tia spotlighted it in an Instagram post.

“The highlight of the night was when she saw me in the crowd, and she gave me a smile and a hello, and then started singing ‘yeah, yeah, yeah’ from when @tameramowrytwo and I were in the singing group, Voices!” she wrote in the caption. “I was so touched by her gesture, and I still can’t believe that it truly happened! She’s a true icon, who continuously inspires me with her talent, dedication, humility, and beautiful spirit 💗.”

Months after that concert, Tia showed support for Beyoncé by attending the premiere of her concert film, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, alongside Gabrielle Union, Coco Jones and Simone Joy Jones.

Tia and Tamera first met Beyoncé in the ’90s when their brother Tahj Mowry starred on Disney Channel’s Smart Guy.

“The first time I met @beyonce was during her Destiny’s Child days when she was on a production with my brother @tahj_mowry, and since then I have been lucky to cross paths with her throughout the years,” Tia noted in the Instagram post that included a photo Tia and Tamera posing with the Destiny’s Child members as teenagers.

“From the beginning, Beyoncé’s undeniable talent is only rivaled by her incredible kindness and generosity,” she continued in the caption recapping the concert. You can truly see how amazing and detailed an artist she is, and how much thought and love was put into this show.”
