Ryan Gosling Lost His Voice Night Before Hosting SNL, Reveals Bowen Yang

Bowen Yang just shared a new insight into Ryan Gosling’s epic 2024 SNL hosting gig.

In an interview with E! on the 2024 Emmys red carpet, Yang opened up about his time on Saturday Night Live, including the April 13 episode Gosling hosted. Explaining what his must-haves for his dressing room are, he offered a surprising — and hilarious — answer.

“I have a throat mister that Ryan Gosling borrowed for his episode because he lost his voice the night before,” Yang said. “I have not washed it since.” The episode earned Gosling, 43, his first Emmy nomination, for guest actor in a comedy series.

Yang, who is up for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series, said he was stunned by the nomination initially.

“I was like, ‘okay, cool, thanks,’ ” says the comedian, 33. “It didn’t register. [I thought], ‘That doesn’t make any sense.’ I am nominated with, like, some of the best dramatic actors that are on TV right now.”

“I just mean, like, The Bear, and Ebon [Moss-Bachrach] is the funniest person on that show,” he added. “There’s such a multitudinal, pluralistic thing that’s going on on TV right now where it’s like, it doesn’t matter what the categories are like, this is amazing. Even to be in the same category as Paul Downs from Hacks — it’s like, we’re on these different kinds of shows, and it’s amazing. What a cool year.”

Yang costars in the upcoming film Wicked, which he worked on alongside Ariana Grande, with whom he said he has developed a deep friendship.

“Best part of being on that cast was that we were all true companions,” he said. “Those were long days and hard days, but we all got along so well. No one is bigger than the story of Oz. Like, there were just no egos. We all were just vibing.”

He continued: “Favorite part of that whole experience was watching Mommy Dearest with Ari and just us laughing at how campy that movie is.”

Recently, Yang spoke with PEOPLE about another project, Hot White Heist, an Audible and Broadway Video series created and written by Adam Goldman. The podcast show follows Yang’s Judy Fink and a crew of misfits from across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum as they attempt to pull off a major heist.

“I love podcasts. I listen to so many, but in a scripted space, I’m not super literate, and so this is such a great way in for people who might also not have that media diet that seems to be missing. The fact that you don’t have to face a television is a huge part of the appeal,” Yang told PEOPLE exclusively in March. “It’s felt really eye-opening this season to do it through that queer lens of thinking about how meaningful it is to … no matter who the other person is, even if they’re in opposition to you, even if they’re your closest confidant, there is something queer about two units interacting with each other that is very interesting.”

Cynthia Nixon, Abbi Jacobson, Jane Lynch, Margaret Cho, Bianca Del Rio, MJ Rodriguez, Shannon Woodward, Stephanie Beatriz, John Cameron Mitchell, Tony Kushner, Cheyenne Jackson, Jonathan Bailey, Peppermint and Brian McCook filled out the rest of the all-queer cast.
