Rihanna Makes Rare Comments About Her 2 Kids — Including How Son Riot, 18 Months, ‘Just Wants to Sing’

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to Rihanna’s two sons RZA and Riot.

During an interview with Harper’s Bazaar published on Saturday, Feb. 22, the Fenty Beauty founder, 37, revealed that her two sons, whom she shares with A$AP Rocky, 36, both have a unique personality — along with an affinity for music.

“RZA is just an empath,” Rihanna told the outlet, referring to her 2-year-old son born in May 2022. “He’s so magical. He loves music. He loves melody. He loves books. He loves water. Bath time, swimming, pool, beach, anything.”

As for her younger son Riot, whom she welcomed in August 2023, she said that he’s “just hilarious” and teased that he takes after his mom in wanting to “sing” during his waking hours.

“When he wakes up, he starts to squeal, scream. Not in a crying way. He just wants to sing,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “And I’m like, ‘Okay, here we go!’ He’s my alarm in the morning! He’s not taking no for an answer from anyone.”

She jokingly added, referencing his lively personality: “I don’t know where he came from, dude.”

The “Diamonds” singer also revealed in the interview that RZA initially struggled with the idea of becoming a brother, “like all [new] siblings do,” but eventually got used to the idea.

“… At first Riot was understanding that his role was being the little brother. Now [RZA] knows he’s in charge,” she said.

Rihanna revealed Riot’s name came courtesy of friend Pharrell Williams, who had worked with A$AP Rocky rapper on the 2013 song “Fashion Killa.” She said that he “gave us this name thinking it was going to be a girl.”

“Pharrell is very deep. He’s not surface. He will never say anything and just leave it there with a full stop,” she said. “He will have the entire history: the energy, the time, the month that it is.”

Rihanna and Rocky have mostly kept the details of their young sons private. However, the family of four have made appearances here and there, including in a photoshoot introducing their youngest son to the world in September 2023.

The “Umbrella” singer previously opened up about motherhood, calling it “legendary” in an interview with British Vogue. She added, “It’s everything. You really don’t remember life before, that’s the craziest thing ever.”

Once her son Riot was born, a source told PEOPLE that “Rihanna feels her family is now complete.”
