WHAT HAPPENED?

A large number of England fans would love to see Guardiola in charge of the Three Lions but for now, the Spaniard has his sights set on a fifth-straight Premier League title with Manchester City. Guardiola, whose current contract expires in 2025, was asked about the England rumours at a press conference ahead of the Community Shield.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guardiola has expressed a desire to coach an international team, as recently as February. But the 53-year-old is in the midst of an era-defining run with City that has seen the club win six league titles, the Champions League, and a host of other trophies. Should he express a desire to move on from the Etihad Stadium then the FA will surely come calling, but for now the gig is Lee Carsley’s after the Under-21 boss was placed in interim charge of the senior team.

    • WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

“I have to consider what to do with my life, if I want to continue here, if I want to take a break, if I want to manage a national team or not,” Guardiola said. “I am fully excited for the season because I see things that I like. There’s a new challenge, to see if we can break our own record.”
