Carey’s mother and sister died on the same day in August

Nick Cannon is sharing how his former wife Mariah Carey is doing after the recent deaths of her mother Patricia and sister Alison.

The Masked Singer host, 43, told the New York Post‘s Page Six that Carey, 55, is “doing the best that she possibly can” after losing both her mom and sister in August, and that he is supporting her during difficult times.

“She’s doing the best that she possibly can, considering the circumstances,” Cannon, who was married to Carey from 2008 to 2016, noted to the publication. “But as a family, we just got to be there to support one another, show love.”

Carey previously confirmed to PEOPLE on Aug. 27 that her mom Patricia, 87, and sister Alison, 63, died on the same day the previous weekend. The singer didn’t disclose their causes of death at the time.

Cannon, who shares 13-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan with Carey, said his ex-wife has been spending more time with the kids which has helped her get through mourning her mom and sister.

“She’s really having a great time with the kids,” he continued. “That is, you know, the most important thing in the world to her, so it’s outstanding to see them supporting their mom the way they do.”

His comments come after Carey posted photos of herself with the twins posing together on the Great Wall of China in Beijing on Instagram on Sept. 14. She appeared in her signature glam with a black dress, butterfly jewelry, sunglasses and heels, while placing her arms around the twins.

“It really is great! 🦋,” the “Fantasy” singer captioned the photo.

Carey shared that she later regretted her outfit choice for climbing the wall as she revealed on X (formerly Twitter), “At the Great Wall of China! Someone should’ve warned me about heels 👠,” adding in parenthesis, “not that I would’ve listened.”

On Sept. 8, Carey spoke out for the first time over the deaths of her mom and sister as she posted a video on Instagram of her “Back at work” rehearsing for her upcoming shows in China and Brazil.

“It’s been a couple of rough weeks, but I appreciate everyone’s love and support so much and I can’t wait to see my fans in China & Brazil,” Carey captioned the post. “Love you! ❤️❤️❤️.”
