While Meryl Streep is known for many notable roles on screen, the actress’ most special one is being a mom.

After Streep and Don Gummer tied the knot in 1978, the pair went on to welcome Henry Gummer, Mamie Gummer, Grace Gummer and Louisa Jacobson in 1979, 1983, 1986 and 1991, respectively. (Streep and Gummer announced their separation in October 2023 after 45 years of marriage.)

When asked whether she found motherhood or acting to be more difficult, the Devil Wears Prada actress candidly confessed being a mother has been her hardest role.

“Mothering. Definitely. Acting — that’s praise, money, fulfillment,” she told The Washington Post in 1998. “Mothering — they don’t even say, ‘Thank you.’ There’s no comparison to acting. I can’t really call acting work, since it’s secretly so fun.”

Streep and Don met through her brother in 1978. The pair married six months later at Streep’s parent’s home and went on to welcome four kids together.

Gummer was often her red carpet date, making their final appearance as a couple at the 2018 Academy Awards.

In October 2023, a rep for Streep told Us Weekly in a statement that the pair had been quietly separated for “more than 6 years,” saying, “While they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.”

Grace Gummer

Grace was born on May 9, 1986 in New York City. She got her first role in 1993’s House of Spirits, where she played a younger version of her mom’s character.

Grace graduated from her mom’s alma mater, Vassar College, with degrees in art history and Italian in 2008. She’s since continued dabbling in acting, playing Rachel in 2012’s Frances Ha, as well as starring in American Horror Story, among other notable roles.

In July 2019, she married musician and actor Tay Strathairn. They separated one month after tying the knot and divorced in 2020.

She confirmed her engagement to music producer Mark Ronson in June 2021, and the pair wed in August of that year.

Grace revealed her pregnancy at W Magazine’s 50th Anniversary party in October 2022 and later welcomed their first child in early 2023.

Louisa Jacobson

Louisa was born on June 12, 1991, in Los Angeles. She followed in her mom and older sister Grace’s footsteps, graduating from Vassar with a degree in psychology in 2013.

She later received a fine arts master’s degree in acting from the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University and attended the British American Drama Academy in Oxford.

After dabbling on stage, Louisa, who uses her middle name Jacobson as her last name, made her screen debut in 2019’s Gone Hollywood. She’s since starred in 2022’s The Gilded Age.

Louisa revealed that her mom lovingly calls her “Pickle” during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

“Even today, she was like, ‘All right, Pickle, is the car coming for you?’ She’s like, ‘Do you have everything you need? Is someone coming to pick you up from the theater?’ ” she said in March 2022. “I’m like, ‘Yeah, Mom. I have it under control.’ She’s like, ‘OK, yeah. Enough from me. Enough from me.’”

In June 2024, Louisa came out as queer in an Instagram post, introducing fans to her partner, Anna Blundell.
