What’s in a name? Ask Lady Gaga.
In a new cover story for ELLE published on Tuesday, Jan. 28, the “Disease” singer, 38, spoke about her upcoming album Mayhem along with her famous moniker.
When asked if Gaga — whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta — would ever change her stage name, she expressed her admiration for it.
“No! I love being Lady Gaga. I love being me,” she said. “I became a star when I was 20. Everything gets reflected back to you that this persona is what makes you special.”
She reportedly took on the iconic name when her ex-boyfriend and music producer Rob Fusari called her Gaga because her voice and style reminded him of Queen’s song “Radio Ga Ga.”
Elsewhere in the cover story with ELLE, Gaga spoke about working on her seventh studio album, which comes out in March.
“The chaos I thought was long gone is fully intact and ready to greet me whenever I’d like,” she said of the process.

“Part of the message of even the first song on the album is that your demons are with you in the beginning and they are with you in the end, and I don’t mean it in a bleak way.”
Gaga mused that perhaps there’s a way to “make friends sooner with this reality instead of running all the time” as she leans into the darkness with her new music.
In a press release shared with PEOPLE, Gaga said that Mayhem‘s style is similar to “reassembling a shattered mirror.”
“Even if you can’t put the pieces back together perfectly, you can create something beautiful and whole in its own new way,” she told the outlet.
The 13-time Grammy winner previously teased the range of music her upcoming album would have, again mentioning the chaos surrounding it. She told The Los Angeles Times in December that there will be “so many different genres, so many different styles, so many different dreams.”
“It leaps around genre in a way that’s almost corrupt. And it ends with love. That’s the answer to all the chaos in my life is that I find peace with love,” she added of the aptly titled record.
“Every song that I wrote, I just kept getting kind of swept away in these different dreams I was having about the past — almost like a recollection of all these bad decisions that I made in my life,” Gaga concluded.
Mayhem will be available to stream Mar. 7.
