“I will never forget this beautiful and amazingly talented woman,” Rita’s husband Alex said in a post on her Facebook account Friday, Nov. 15
Jim Carrey’s older sister Rita has died, PEOPLE can confirm.
“It is with heavy heart and my deepest sadness, surrounded by her family and friends Rita passed away peacefully and quietly on November 14 2024,” Rita’s husband Alex wrote in a post on her Facebook account Friday, Nov. 15.
He went on to share that the couple “have been together for 16 years” and “just got married last year in July in an outdoor wedding that she has always wanted.”
“We travelled the world and met many people who we consider friends. Rita was my bestest friend, my lover and my beautiful wife,” he continued. “Rita always had a loving soul and wanted to help everyone even total strangers. As everyone knows Christmas was Rita’s favourite holiday actually it was everyday for her and she started a fundraiser to help a local charity.”
According to her Facebook profile, Rita — one of Jim’s three siblings, who also include the actor’s older brother John Carrey and older sister Patricia Carrey — had a career in music and other media, including as a radio-show co-host and producer of The Peet & Reet Show.
Rita and her brothers and sister were born to Kathleen and Percy Carrey, and raised in their native Canada, near Toronto.
In his post about Rita’s death, Alex wrote, “Family and Friends are invited to attend a candlelight vigil in Rita’s memory on December 7 2024 on Heathcote Terrace in St. Catharines.”
“Following the vigil everyone is encouraged to attend the Christmas on the Terrace public event in support of Gillian’s place,” he continued. “Donations in Rita’s memory can be made to Gillian’s place directly or at the event Non-perishable food, children’s clothing, toiletry items or unwrapped children’s presents are encouraged.”
He concluded his tribute by paying tribute to his “wonderful and crazy journey with Rita” over their decade-and-a-half-plus together.
“She filled everyone’s heart with joy with every step she took and I will never forget this beautiful and amazingly talented woman,” Alex wrote. “Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend.”
“Until we meet again. You really did have the Time of your life,” he added. “Your bestest friend and husband, Alex .”
