“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” Lopez said. “When you talk about the importance of musicals, the reason that I even wanted to be in this business was because my mom would sit me in front of the TV… we’d come on once a year, West Side Story on Thanksgiving. I remember I was just mesmerized. And I was like, ‘That’s what I want to do.'”

She continued, “And that was always my goal. And this is the first time I actually got to do it. This crowd made my dream come true!”

The film, which is co-produced by Matt Damon and Lopez’s now ex-husband Ben Affleck, stars Diego Luna as Valentin Arregui, a political prisoner during Argentina’s civil war in the 1980s who forms a bond with Luis Molina (Tonatiuh) while imprisoned together. Lopez plays Aurora, the woman Molina is obsessed with in prison.

At Sundance, Lopez shared that Kiss of the Spider Woman is her first musical.

“I did Selena years ago, but it was not my voice,” she said of the 1997 Selena Quintanilla-Pérez biopic. “They wanted to use her voice. I did dance a little, but there wasn’t much choreography. So this was my first musical.”

Kiss of the Spider Woman does not yet have a theater release date.
