De Gea called it a day on his Manchester United career at the end of the 2022/23 season after the Red Devils decided not to extend his contract. Having now been out of action for over a year, journalist Rudy Galetti has reported that the Spaniard has held talks with Al-Shabab and another unnamed Saudi Pro League side over a potential return to the sport.
The former United captain left Old Trafford after a 12-year spell having joined the 20-time Premier League winners from Atletico Madrid at the age of 21. After a difficult start to life, De Gea quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his top-notch performances in goal for the Red Devils. However, the last couple of seasons saw his form dwindling and as the Spaniard became a sort of liability on the side, United decided to call it time.
De Gea could be considered one of the best goalkeepers to have graced the Premier League over the last decade and a half as he won the Premier League Golden Glove on two occasions and was included in the PFA Team of the Season on five occasions. He was also named Manchester United’s Player of the Season four times.
Last month, De Gea was spotted training in a full Manchester United kit and it is possible that the Spaniard was indeed aiming for a return to football, and if the reports are to be believed it will be in the Saudi Pro League.
