Bruno Fernandes is pure class! Man Utd training goalkeeper lifts lid on ‘really good leader’ and reveals best finisher at Carrington
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been hailed as a “really good leader” and the club’s “best finisher”.

Former Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis has been training at Manchester United for much of the past year, off and on, and in that period he has worked alongside the club’s biggest stars. The 36-year-old opened up on why Bruno is such a good player and leader, and why the Portuguese international is more clinical than the likes of Marcus Rashford and more.

WHAT JOE LEWIS SAID
He told the Manchester Evening News earlier this month: “So I knew what the level of training would be at United, but there were one or two players who would catch your eye that are just a level above anything I’ve seen. People like Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen, who are just technically brilliant and strike the ball differently. Rashford was great and a few people surprise you, like Amad, who stands out in training every single session – he really puts a shift in, works hard and you can’t get the ball off him.
“There are a few you assume will be good, like Bruno who is the captain and has achieved loads in the game, and you see what he’s capable of when it’s a matchday, but what stood out more than anything was his leadership qualities. He was also fantastic in that sense. He’d lead by example in training and he’s just a really good guy. He’d spend time with me, someone he didn’t know, who was just a training goalkeeper, and we’d sit down at lunchtime.
“We’d just chat about normal stuff. When you don’t know these guys and you think they’re the world’s best players, you don’t know what they’re going to be like in person. Bruno didn’t need to do that with me, but he’s a really good leader and an incredibly talented player.”
The keeper added: “Bruno has a wand of a right foot and has unbelievable technique. He’s the hardest worker I’ve ever seen and there’s loads of hard workers at United. Every day, he works on shooting, his first touch and he’s out there training longer than any player at the club.
“The way he strikes the ball, the top spin he puts on it, it looks like the ball is going over the bar and it somehow dips in, going in under the side of the bar. You get used to it after a little while, once you’ve faced over 2000 shots from him, but it was honestly brilliant to watch. Bruno was the best finisher I’d say, then you have Rashy, brilliant as well, and Rasmus [Hojlund], who has an absolute hammer foot and beats goalkeepers with the pace of the shot.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Bruno has been a hugely important player at United since signing from Sporting in early 2020. He has scored 79 goals and bagged 67 assists in 235 appearances and that form was rewarded with a new contract until 2027 – with the option of a further year. And going by Lewis’ comments, the 29-year-old is still a huge asset for the Red Devils.
