‘Die Hard 2’ starring Willis and ‘Ghost’ starring Moore dominated the box office 34 years ago
Dominating the domestic box office as a married couple is a powerful joint milestone not many Hollywood couples achieve.
Ryan Reynolds, 47, and Blake Lively, 36, are the first couple to have their films rank No. 1 and No. 2 at the box office simultaneously in 34 years.
After Lively’sIt Ends With Uspremiered on Friday, Aug. 9, the film has already has taken home $50 million, placing it just behind Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine, which has grossed more than $54 million this weekend and $494.3 million domestically since its July 26 release.
Demi Moore and Bruce Willis were the last married couple to have their films become the top domestic films.
In 1990, Willis had Die Hard 2 out in theaters on July 3, while Moore’s Ghost premiered less than two weeks later. At one point that year at the box office, Die Hard 2 and Ghost were the top two films, respectively. Ghost received five Oscar nominations and won two.
Overall, Ghost ended up becoming the second-most successful movie at the domestic box office in 1990 with $217.6 million grossed, while Die Hard 2 placed No. 8 with $117.5 million.
Ever intertwined by movies, Moore, 61, and Willis, 69, met at a screening of Stakeout in 1987. They married that year and welcomed three daughters before they divorced in 2000. They remain close friends today.
Willis and Moore appeared in three movies together: Mortal Thoughts in 1991, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America in 1996 and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003.
Meanwhile, Lively and Reynolds have teamed up for Green Lantern in 2011 and IF in 2024. Lively even had a cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine as Ladypool.
