The pop singer and costar Cynthia Erivo offer up behind-the-scenes secrets in the movie’s digital bonus features
While watching Wicked, we couldn’t help but wonder… was that really a Sex and the City star making a cameo in the smash movie musical?
Ariana Grande confirms it’s true in the movie’s commentary bonus feature (which is available to those who buy the film on digital platforms). David Eigenberg, who played Cynthia Nixon’s love interest Steve Brady on the 1998-2004 series (and then her estranged husband on the MAX follow-up And Just Like That…) has an uncredited part voicing the Tamarin Monkey.
“So that I guess is Steve from Sex and the City. He makes a cameo. He has one line and it’s the best line in the whole thing, the little Tamarin Monkey,” says Grande, before mimicking Eigenberg’s raspy voice.
Eigenberg’s sole line of dialogue in the Wizard of Oz prequel: “A solicitor was sacked just for arguing a case.”
“It’s the craziest thing in the world. You were great on 20 seasons of Sex and the City,” continues Grande, who reveals other facts and behind-the-scenes tidbits about the Broadway adaptation while dishing with costar Cynthia Erivo.
The scene in question comes about 42 minutes into the movie when Elphaba (Erivo) — Oz’s future Wicked Witch — visits her Shiz University professor Dr. Dillamond (Peter Dinklage). The instructor, a goat, is holding court to discuss the new unfriendly climate towards Oz’s talking animals — a pivotal plot point in the critically acclaimed movie.
Among the other facts Grande and Erivo share, according to Variety: the “thank u, next” singer, who plays Glinda, the future Good Witch, hurt her neck by performing the character’s signature hair toss.
“I couldn’t move my head. I had Icy Hot patches all over. It was a solid week of Icy Hot patches on my neck,” she says.
Erivo also talks about how it felt to film the ballroom scene in which her character is ridiculed by other classmates after Glinda gifts her an ugly hat to wear to a dance.
“I still remember how this felt — just horrible,” Erivo says on the commentary, per Variety.
“In the room, it was utter silence,” Grande adds. “And everyone in this room, every single person, was right there with you. I think everyone in this home probably still feels how this day felt.”
Wicked is now available to rent or purchase on platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV +.
