WHAT HAPPENED?

Two days after England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Southgate decided to resign as Three Lions manager – ending a near eight-year spell in charge. Now, FC Seoul man Lingard, who was handed his England debut by Southgate in 2016, has heaped praise on the 53-year-old and wished him the best in the future.

WHAT JESSE LINGARD SAID
He wrote on Instagram: “Thank you for everything gaffer, from managing me at u21 level to giving me my debut for @england and making many memories that brought the nation together that I’ll cherish for a lifetime 🙌🏾❤️ wishing you the best on your next chapter 🤝🏾.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lingard earned all of his 36 caps under Southgate between 2016-2021, with his highlight coming during the 2018 World Cup as England reach the semi-finals in Russia. His gaffer led the nation to two Euros finals, is the country’s most successful national boss since Sir Alf Ramsey and it is clear he had a big impact on many players during his time as England manager.
